Lesson on the fungal skin infection known as Tinea versicolor ("Variety of colors"). Tinea versicolor is a common skin infection due to the fungus Malassezia furfur. Infection with this fungus leads to characteristic skin changes with "a variety of colors", including hypopigmentation, hyperpigmentation, and erythematous changes. This fungus causes these changes by producing a compound that affects the melanin producing cells in our body. In the lesson, we discuss many of the risk factors that cause this condition along with the specific details of the pathogenesis, and how we go about diagnosing and treating this condition.
